#TBT: Whitney Loves New York
Summer 2011 I had the amazing opportunity to spend three weeks in the best city in the world, New York City. Three weeks to explore, create independently outside of the classroom, visit artists & museums and most of all...live freely.
I stayed in Manhattan, a few blocks from Time Square and our studio space was in DUMBO Brooklyn. I walked past the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridge everyday.
While there, I kept a travel blog Whitney Loves New York. I've been reading through it lately and figured I'd share one of my posts from it. It's been entirely too long since I've been..TOO LONG!!!!
Today was an amazing day in studio. I went in at about 10am and left at 9pm, so I got a lot of stuff done. I designed another stencil for textile designs today. It was something that I envisioned in my head but found it hard to translate my idea onto paper. I started by drawing out a couple of drafts but ended up moving to a larger scale and cutting the shapes out as I went, this design is inspired by the lines in the designs of the city’s skyscrapers. After cutting it with paper I noticed that it cast some interesting shadows on the wall. I am very pleased with the results, it will translate in multiple scales and I’m also considering it in jewelry designs.
I also did some semi- final sketches for the collection, I drew the figures large scale (well large for me). Fringe and open weave looks like it is going to be a reappearing theme in the collection, I started designing other ways to make these design elements innovative…I’m close to that point.
I’m excited to design more prints for the collection and to get to the fabric stores, I’m sure that NY will not disappoint in that area. It was a pretty cool temperature day in the city, it also rained today which helped it cool off while we walked to the train. I also think that I have finalized the color pallette for the collection…its kind of bright for fall but I’m a bright person, besides this is my label and not anyone else’s. Still crazy to believe that I am in New York, let alone making art in New York.
So many memories! I lowkey feel like crying lol
Let's do it again NYC,
