Body Electric: Kemper Gala 2018
The Kemper Gala is the event in KC that you cannot miss, and this weekend was another gala for the books. This year’s theme was Body Electric: Color The Night. Ignite Your Soul. The shindig was hosted by Honorary Co-Chairs Christy and Bill Gautreaux, Co-Chairs Lisa Garney and Lauren Merriman, and Ambassadors Co-Chairs Karen and Jack Holland. Artist Brady Legler was also in attendance for the festivities.
So get this, I didn’t make my look until the day of the event! Talk about making it work. So neon, glittery-ness and sequins were on the brain. I sketched my idea while in the car on the way back from Tulsa and hoped for the best when I got to studio when it came to my fabric stash.
I went with a highlighter yellow green spandex crop top, a pencil skirt with mermaid vibes and a scuba knit long sleeve top. The scuba knit was actually a remnant I found at Jo-Ann, I only had 3/4 of a yard to work with. I wanted something with sleeves because Kansas City weather and honestly if I could have worn pants, I would have! Overall the design, pattern drafting and sewing took me 5 hours…a bit longer than I would have wanted but my serger needles broke during the process.
I decided to pair my look with cobalt blue furry block heels, a metallic unicorn crossbody bag and metallic trench coat. My cousin, hairstylist Gabrielle Williams was my plus one for the night and we lived it up. Mally of Broke Ass Girl Travel and Emily of The Boozy Bungalow were in attendance, so we had a lot of fun chatting it up, taking tons of selfies, laughs, food, Shake Shack and signature drinks.
The main exhibition this year is Angela Dufresne: Making a Scene “…focusing on her signature depictions of modern life”, I’m going to have to stop back by the museum to check it out in depth. Art, music, dancing and fun people always makes for a night to remember.
